Plain English Campaign Press Release

First Impression help Plain English Campaign with the launch of their Global Shred website, celebrating 30 years of fighting gobbledygook Since the first shredding of jargon-filled documents outside Parliament 30 years ago, the Plain English Campaign have been persuading companies across the world to use plain language.

Celebrating 30 years in 2009 they enlisted marketing company, First Impression to help them with a new global campaign using the Worldwide Web and a secret agent to uncover and banish gobbledygook. ‘Ted the Shred’ and the Global Shred website were created – a character and a fun website with a serious message that is loud and clear! www.global-shred.com

Marie Clair, spokeswoman for Plain English Campaign says, “Public outcry, daily complaints and 30 years of fighting against jargon have had a job holding back the tide of confusing and pompous language. There‘ll be no hiding place for jargon, even our MPs are being offered free plain English training because we know they really want to speak the language of the people.”

First Impression was happy to help. As creative designers they were able to come up with ideas and bring Ted the Shred to life in a new website for the start of this worldwide campaign. Martin Duncan, Sales Director at First Impression says, “We’ve been an advocate of using plain English for many years. Our MD writes for many blue chip companies, helping them to cut out jargon and help their customers understand the benefits of their products and services.

Whatever size of company you are, whether your customers are businesses or consumers you have to get back to basics – who are my customers, where are they and what’s the best way of communicating with them. Companies and organisations often fall into the trap of using jargon or language they understand but forget how confusing it can be for potential customers. At First Impression we add value because we consider all the elements of what makes a good website – good design, good clear content, good navigation and good optimisation. We’re delighted with the Global Shred website and fully support what Plain English Campaign are doing.”
