How we created a mobile version of the Old Hall Hotel's "Christmas 2011" website...
- Create a sub domain - this is where the mobile version of the website's code base will be located i.e. m.christmasattheoldhall.co.uk
- Detect and re-direct mobile visitors - with the use of a php script on the main website, any visitor using a mobile handset will be detected and re-directed to the mobile version automatically.
- Serve mobile visitors a different code base - After being re-directed the visitor to the mobile sub-domain are presented with a different version of the main website which has been created using the jQuery Mobile Framework. The framework provides a great set of user interface elements and tools (such as lists, forms dialogs etc) which can be used to build a website which is compatible across all popular mobile device platforms. It is built on the rock-solid jQuery and jQuery UI foundation. It’s lightweight code is built with progressive enhancement, and has a flexible, easily theme able design.
- Monitor the results - Both the mobile version and the desktop websites have separate Google analytics tracking code. This allows us to distinguish the two websites in our account so we can monitor the share of visitors between each, helping us to improve the site if necessary. This is also a good way to monitor the return on investment. For example, since the site was launched last month, mobile visits have accounted for 19% of the total traffic to the site.
