Top Tips for designing an effective email marketing campaign

A well written email with the right balance of graphics, text and carefully placed links is most likely to reach the intended recipient and get your message across effectively.

Follow these top tips to help get the most out of your email campaign:

Be short and to the point

People reading emails have a short attention span. Don’t waffle and make sure you include clear links to news items, documents or products on your website.

Optimise your images for web use

Ensure that the file size and the image resolution are correct for email. Big files sizes mean users waiting a long time for images to appear. Images can be optimised using most graphics packages, or if you are using our emailshot system they can be optimised using the image editor.

Don’t use excessive images

Spam filters rate content against various criteria, and one of these is an over-reliance on images. Make sure your email is built with a complimentary mix of images and web based text.

Include Alt Tags

An alt tag is a textual description of each image. Email clients such as Outlook turn images off by default, so users need a way of telling at a glance what images represent. Labelling your images with useful descriptions means a user is more likely to enable the images and read your email.

Don’t use ‘dangerous’ words

‘Free!’, ‘Special Offers!!’ etc- all are used extensively in spam. Filters therefore don’t look kindly on emails that contain phrases like this.

Don’t use ‘dangerous’ designs

Overuse of bold, enormous font sizes, many different fonts, millions of links- again these are all widely used by spammers. Don’t get filtered out by following suit.

Remember your call to action!

You’ve taken the time to design, write and send a really interesting email campaign so make sure your potential customers know how to contact you! Telephone, number, email address, postal address and website should all be clearly visible.
